Just in time for August, when\u00a0you’re looking for fresh\u00a0activities, \u00a0I am sharing my\u00a050 gardening\u00a0activities with children. <\/b>My kids are grown and almost ready to leave for college but they can attest to how wonderful these actives areas we spent many a summer day in the garden and the woods. \u00a0From our family to yours, we hope you enjoy these summer garden activities!<\/p>\n
1\u00a0 Give the child a paper plate on a stick and have them glue on \u2018their face\u2019 using scavenger items from the garden.<\/p>\n
2\u00a0 Make a birdhouse or a bird feeder (also consider butterflies, ladybugs, and bats).<\/p>\n
3\u00a0 Build a treehouse or a tepee, spending a meal or the night outside.<\/p>\n
4\u00a0 Make a collage of flowers, birdseed, eggshells, leaves, & dirt.<\/p>\n
5\u00a0 Show how to whistle with acorn & reed whistles.<\/p>\n
6\u00a0 Catch fireflies and make a lantern with a jar and some screening. Remember to release them before bed!<\/p>\n
7\u00a0 Make a dandelion wish.<\/p>\n
8\u00a0 Have a contest, who can dig up and count the most worms.<\/p>\n
9\u00a0 During a rainfall jump in puddles with an elephant ear umbrella.<\/p>\n
10\u00a0 Etch a pumpkin or gourd with a child’s name or design and watch it morph as the gourd grows.<\/p>\n
11\u00a0 Make a feather painting by painting with the feather, grass, leaves, or twigs.<\/p>\n
12\u00a0 Feed a Venus Fly Trap Plant.<\/p>\n
13\u00a0 Braid flower chains & bracelets by braiding stems together.<\/p>\n
14\u00a0 Force branches like Pussy Willows and pets them.<\/p>\n
15 \u00a0Make a garden Scrap Book with seed packets, drawings, and collectible items from the yard.<\/p>\n
16\u00a0 Using crayons and paper make rubbings of bark, flowers & leaves.<\/p>\n
17\u00a0 \u2018He loves me he loves me not\u2019\u2026 remove petals from flowers using the nursery rhyme.<\/p>\n
18\u00a0 Make a Holly Hock doll by removing the stems, turn them upside down and add twigs for arms.<\/p>\n
19\u00a0 Build an insect cage, terrariums, or an ant hotel.<\/p>\n
20\u00a0 Look for & document birds, spiders, bees, and butterflies.<\/p>\n
21\u00a0 Look for 4-leaf clovers (yes, they are really out there).<\/p>\n
22\u00a0 Look for Fairies (early in the morning) and trolls (under mushrooms).<\/p>\n
23\u00a0 Make a child\u2019s rock garden allowing for constant rearranging.<\/p>\n
24\u00a0 Make birdseed pinecones with peanut butter and seed.<\/p>\n
25\u00a0 Allot one specific flowerpot, whiskey barrel, or window box for the child to take care of.<\/p>\n
26\u00a0 Use foxtail grass to make tickling sticks or crawling caterpillars by removing stems.<\/p>\n
27\u00a0 Design a nature bracelet- using tape, stick items from nature to the sticky side, and seal.<\/p>\n
28\u00a0 Paint your fingernails by plucking flower petals, licking them & sticking them on fingertips<\/p>\n
29\u00a0 Hang a Pin Wheels, Wind Socks, Wind Chimes, and notice the wind and their noise.<\/p>\n
30\u00a0 Place a buttercup under your chin and look for a reflection.<\/p>\n
31\u00a0 Make music from poppy seed pods maracas.<\/p>\n
32\u00a0 Press flowers and leaves for pictures and gift cards.<\/p>\n
33\u00a0 Dress up a scarecrow.<\/p>\n
34\u00a0 Find and collect bird nests and eggshells.\u00a0 You can shellac them for durability.<\/p>\n
35\u00a0 Have a snapdragon puppet theater by pinching them on the two sides and the flower will ‘talk’.<\/p>\n
36\u00a0 Stand patiently near a vine with your finger extended and watch the vine send a tendril out to your finger & wrap your finger.<\/p>\n
37\u00a0 Stroke a bumblebee that is lethargic after spending a cold night outside.<\/p>\n
38\u00a0 Stroke a mimosa tree branch & watch the leaves move.<\/p>\n
39\u00a0 Take an empty egg carton or bucket sending the child on a treasure hunt.<\/p>\n
40\u00a0 Taste your dirt, farmers would taste dirt: sweet means a good harvest & sour means a poor harvest.<\/p>\n
41\u00a0 Collect and paint garden rocks with flowers, bugs, or plant names to decorate your garden.<\/p>\n
42\u00a0 Go on a moonwalk.\u00a0 Note night flowers, noises, fireflies, constellations, etc.<\/p>\n
43\u00a0 Make a photo safari.\u00a0 Give each child a camera & a list of things he might see: flowers, trees, bugs, leaves.<\/p>\n
44\u00a0 Stick weaving.\u00a0 Find a V-shaped stick & wind yarn making a loom. Collect nature items to decorate.<\/p>\n
45\u00a0 Design a nature print by placing flowers & leaves on paper or fabric, flip the paper upside down and smooch it with a rock or hammer leaving the imprints.<\/p>\n
46\u00a0 Plant and eat edible flowers in your salad.<\/p>\n
47\u00a0 Have a bean pole race.<\/p>\n
48\u00a0 Recycle tin cans with paint, hammer 2 holes at the top for ribbon, make a May basket for flowers.<\/p>\n
49\u00a0 See who can make the largest and prettiest mud pie.<\/p>\n
50\u00a0 Don\u2019t’ forget to sit back, drink lemonade, and admire the harvest whether it be an unripe tomato picked early to a handful of marigold petals.<\/p>\n
