Car Seat Safety: A Guide For New Parents
Why Car Seat Safety Matters
Car crashes are a leading cause of death for children in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that proper car seat use can reduce the risk of injury by up to 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers.
The truth is simple. The safest car seat is one that:
• Fits your child’s height and weight
• Fits your vehicle correctly
• Is installed and used properly every time
At Birth You Desire, we help families make confident, evidence-based decisions that protect their children.
What to Look for in a Safe Car Seat
1. 5-Point Harness (Gold Standard)
A 5-point harness secures your child at the shoulders, hips, and between the legs. This spreads crash forces across the strongest parts of the body.
2. Easy-to-Use Harness System
The adjuster should be located at the front near the child’s feet. You should be able to tighten it easily with one hand.
3. Chest Clip Positioning
The chest clip should sit at armpit level. This keeps the harness properly aligned during a crash.
4. LATCH or Seat Belt Installation
Both are safe when used correctly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirms that correct installation matters more than which system you use.
5. Always Buy New (When Possible)
Avoid used car seats unless you know the full history. Car seats:
• Expire after about 6 to 10 years, depending on the manufacturer
• May have hidden crash damage
• May be missing parts or instructions

Car Seat Stages
These recommendations reflect current guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Rear-Facing (Birth to at least age 2, often longer)
• Keep your child rear-facing as long as possible
• Follow the seat’s height and weight limits
• This position best protects the head, neck, and spine
Forward-Facing with Harness (Usually age 2 to 5+)
• Use a 5-point harness as long as possible
• Do not rush this stage
Booster Seat (Usually age 5 to 12)
• Use until the seat belt fits properly
• Lap belt should sit low on hips
• Shoulder belt should cross the chest, not the neck
Seat Belt Only (Usually 10 to 12+)
• The child should pass the 5-step test
• Back against seat, knees bend naturally, belt fits correctly

Installation: The Most Common Mistake
More than 50% of car seats are installed incorrectly.
Correct installation checklist:
• Car seat moves less than 1 inch side to side
• Harness is snug, no slack
• Chest clip at armpit level
• No bulky coats under the harness

Critical Safety Tips Most Parents Miss
• Do not use aftermarket products unless approved by the manufacturer
• Avoid bulky winter coats under the harness
