Safe Sex During Pregnancy
Pregnancy is a time when a woman’s body is going through many changes which may affect how a woman feels sexually. In particular, you both may have some concerns about safe sex during pregnancy.
Is having sex during pregnancy going to hurt my baby?
No, if you are having a normal, healthy pregnancy, sex is safe during all stages of pregnancy.
I am not very interested in sex, is that normal?
Many women feel a change in their levels of sexual desire when they are pregnant. Some women experience a change in their sex drive in their second trimester as their energy levels improve.
My partner is afraid sex will hurt our unborn baby. Is that true?
Some partners are concerned that deep penetration might be too close to the baby’s head and could harm the baby. The short answer is no. The baby is protected by your uterus, the amniotic sac and fluid, the mucous plug, your abdominal muscles and your pelvic bones.
When should avoid sex?
Intercourse is safe as long as the pregnant partner feels safe and her bag of water is intact. However, your provider may limit your sexual intercourse if you have:
- An infection
- Unusual bleeding without a cause
- If you are leaking amniotic fluid
- A history or preterm labor or premature birth
- You are dilated prematurely (cervical incompetence)
- You have placenta previa (low lying placenta)
Can having sex cause my water to break or cause me to go into labor?
No, but orgasms may cause mild contractions.
